Last updated: May 2026

Who we are

Free The Sheds is a New Zealand public-interest campaign for common-sense building consent reform, initiated by Waikato Sheds. This privacy policy explains how we handle information collected through this website and the supporter form at freethesheds.org.nz.

What information we collect

When you submit the supporter form, we may collect:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your region
  • Your role (homeowner, farmer, builder, etc.)
  • Whether you support the campaign
  • Whether shed consent rules have affected your project
  • An estimated cost or delay
  • Your story or experience (if provided)
  • Your preferences regarding being contacted or quoted

We do not collect payment information, sensitive personal information, or government-issued identifiers.

How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Understand the scale and nature of support for the campaign
  • Contact you about campaign developments if you have agreed to this
  • Build an evidence base of how current shed consent rules affect New Zealanders
  • Produce anonymised statistics about the impact of current rules

We will not publish your name, business, location or story without your explicit permission. If you have indicated you are willing to be quoted anonymously, we may use your story without identifying details.

Who we share your information with

Free The Sheds is an open industry and public-interest campaign. Supporter details are used for campaign advocacy only. We do not sell your information. We do not share your identifiable information with commercial supporters without your consent. We may share anonymised, aggregated data (e.g. “70% of respondents reported delays of more than 3 months”) publicly as part of the campaign.

Data storage and security

Form submissions are stored securely. We take reasonable steps to protect your information from loss, misuse, or unauthorised access. This website is hosted on secure infrastructure and uses HTTPS throughout.
